Cultural heritage and cultural tourism

If there were no people living in it, Zagorje would be just fairy-tale hills. There would be no story. And people like to tell stories, create experiences... Write history. And then store all that history in museums and castles to leave trace for those who will come. Therefore, if you are interested in what Zagorje is known for, go to one, or better, all Zagorje museums and castles, and find out everything you are interested in. Instead of the time machine, enter them!

Krapina Neanderthal museum

Not far from the place where Dragutin Gorjanović-Kramberger led excavations for six years, during which the evidence was found that the caveman lived on Hušnjakovo hill, the Krapina Neanderthal museum emerged. The entire museum, apart from the facade, is embedded in the landscape, which evokes the original habitat of the Neanderthal - the half-cave. This conceptually perfectly designed museum hides in its interior many surprises. Surrender to the history time machine and find out how people lived over hundred thousand years ago.

Museum of peasants' revolts / Castle Oršić

Although at first glance Zagorje seems like a fairy-tale place, some historically significant events took place here in the past, which had a great impact on the development of society in Zagorje, as well as throughout Croatia. One of these events was Seljačka buna (Peasants’ revolt), a struggle of oppressed peasants against the mighty Franjo Tahy and other noblemen. The museum is located in the baroque castle Oršić, surrounded by a beautiful garden with an imposing monument. Each year, in Donja Stubica, a spectacular manifestation with a faithful representation of the battle is held. When you come, raise your fist in the air, say loudly ‘Revolt is lasting', and join the oppressed!

Veliki Tabor Castle

The noble town Veliki Tabor is one of the most important cultural and historical monuments of the profane architecture of continental Croatia. With its location on the top of Hum (hill) Košnički, it dominates the Zagorje region for more than half a century and offers a beautiful view of Zagorje and Slovenia. It is mostly known for the legend of Veronika Desinić, who was walled up in the walls of the castle because of forbidden love with the young count. Allegedly, Veronika’s cries can still be heard, especially during winter. Agh!

Museum Staro selo ("Old Village") Kumrovec

Ethno village Kumrovec is the largest traditionally decorated area in Croatia that helps visitors to envision the authentic look of Zagorje village from the beginning of the 20th century - the everyday life of peasants, their customs and crafts. One of the curiosities is the Center for traditional crafts, skills and knowledge where you can try some of the traditional crafts yourself and experience and revive the spirit of old times at first hand. There are about forty restored objects in the village, among which the school and the birth house of Josip Broz Tito, in front of which Tito’s monument, the work of the famous sculptor Antun Augustinčić, is situated, stands out.

Antun Augustinčić Gallery

Compared to some other places, Klanjec is not big, but it is big because of the works of Croatian greats who stayed here in some way. One of these great men, the famous sculptor Antun Augustinčić, was born in Klanjec, and is best known for the cavalry monument Mir (Peace), located in front of the United Nations building in New York. Augustinčić left a valuable collection of art to his hometown, which initiated the construction of a dedicated museum space in Croatian Zagorje - his gallery, which you will visit with pleasure.

Museum Radboa

In Museum Radboa the geology and archaeology lovers will get their pleasure. Rich fossil findings attracted many world experts, because in Radoboj deposits there are petrified rests from the time when Zagorje hills were just islets in the Pannonian Sea. The mining collection will bring you closer to the rich mining past of the Radoboj region, which began with the finding of native sulfur. Among these all numerous and valuable exhibits, the petrified leaf of vine stands out, which is almost 15 million years old. Love between Zagorje and wine seems to be eternal!

Old-timer museum Presečki

What and how people drove through Zagorje from the first car to the modern era can be found in the Old-timer museum Presečki at impressive 1100 square meters of exhibition space. It is not just the cars that ripped Zagorje roads, over twenty cars, mostly from the fifties, sixties and seventies of the last century and more than sixty motorcycles can be found in the collection. Next to them, several buses, bicycles, and other objects that show the world of oldtimers are also exhibited. Definitely the right place for all lovers of motoring and motorcycling.

Museum Dr. Zlatko Dragutin Tudjina

In the centre of Pregrada, opposite the "Zagorje cathedral" there is a museum where over six hundred exhibits are displayed in three collections - numismatics, mining and pharmacy collection Thierry. The numismatic collection shows various medals from Croatia and the world. The mining collection contains mining equipment and records of mining in Pregrada. The pharmacy collection will remind you, through pharmacy work of Thierry family, that Pregrada was the site of the first industrial production of medicines in Croatia. By the way, if you were wondering, the man the museum was named after is a descendant of the family that owned Pregrada’s coal-mines. The man from the profession, one could say.
