Dora Cafe Bar - Varaždin

Fragrant rolls, sweet tortes...

In the 18th century, the city of Varaždin leased one coffee house, alongside numerous other taprooms. At one auction in 1774, the results were so unclear that the Croatian Royal Council had to intervene, and eventually decided that Varaždin would receive one more coffee house, which was to be located in the basement of City Hall.

The city magistrate, however, did not want another coffee house, and so instead of a coffee house, a taproom was installed. “So that the city folk might have some use of it”, as was described in the official decision. And so the city was left with just one coffee house. The times have changed, and the city’s offerings and social life throughout the centuries in between brought more coffee houses. One of them, Kavana Dora, is located in the building of what was once Varaždin’s largest restaurant, “Crni Orao” (The Black Eagle). Dora’s selection of sweets continues the story of Varaždin’s legendary feasts, where guests enjoyed delicacies like klipići, gibanica with cheese, and strudels…
